About Jamal Records

Yusuf Islam
Yusuf Islam
In the late sixties he adopted the name Cat Stevens and was selected to launch the new Deram Label, which also introduced new British talent such as David Bowie and the Moody Blues. Cat Stevens at eighteen became a successful solo artist of the late 1960s. But following a sickness, catching TB, he undertook an ongoing search for peace and spiritual truth. He returned to the writing and recording after a year and in 1970s. Read the full Journey.

Zain Bhikha
Zain Bhikha
Born in 1974 in Pretoria, South Africa where he started singing from a young age, though entertaining family and friends was as far as he went. In 1994, Zain entered a singing competition on a local radio station. From thousands of entries he won the competition. This success led to his first album 'A Way of Life' (1994).

His first introduction to the international stage was with Yusuf Islam on the album 'A is for Allah' after which he has gone on to release 4 solo albums to date. He is also involved in educational projects locally in South Africa as well as international initiatives to educate through song.
Dawud Wharnsby
Dawud Wharnsby
A third generation Canadian with Scottish and English roots, Dawud Wharnsby's recordings and reputation have established him as an institution in the realm of English language Nasheed (spiritual songs of a world-rhythm/folk style, drawn from Islamic cultural and musical roots).

A traveler, writer, troubadour and multi-instrumentalist, Dawud (David) Wharnsby first emerged onto the North American folk music scene in 1991. Here he established his skills not only as a superb lyricist, but also as a powerful vocalist, capable of drawing listeners into his world like a vibrant stage actor or an intimate storyteller.

Dawud has been working closely with Jamal Records and new releases are in the pipeline this coming year.
Khalid Belrhouzi
Khalid Belrhouzi
Khalid began singing from the tender age of 7 and until recently was the lead singer of the French nasheed group 'Badr'. His albums 'Les Noms de Dieu' (The Names of God) and 'Paroles Veridiques' (True Word) were both released in France in 2002. Extracts from this rendition of the Burdah, the classic poem by Al-Busiri praising the Prophet (pbuh).

In 2007 he released his first solo album with Jamal Records of traditional and original writing, his return to the studio means that we will be hearing more from this exquisite vocalist in the months and years to come. www.khalidbelrhouzi.com
Benammi
Benammi
Benammi born 1979 in Morocco had a passion for melody making from an early age. He would spend his time composing songs but wasn't really feeling inspired until he started to listen to talks from scholars of Islam. The talks he heard inspired him to change his direction and record a song that would remind himself and others of our purpose in life. This was the turning point in 2004 which led him to Jamal Records and subsequently a duet with Yusuf Islam on the album Footsteps in the Light on the track 'The White Moon'.

Since then Benammi has become part of the full time crew at Jamal Records working closely with other artist projects. A talented Composer and Artist, Benammi looks forward to sharing the message and adding his voice to the call. Recently he composed and arranged the album 'Man'ana' of Khalid Belrhouzi and is now working with Zain Bhikha on his forthcoming releases for 2008.
